Found this fabric whilst digging through my mom's quilting stash. It looks similar to Sand Swirl at first glance, but it's drawn very differently. It's also looser and more chaotic.
Normally I draw steps for patterns I post, but this one is probably pretty obvious. It starts with a simple spiral on a stem, with auras and 'rainbows' added in randomly to fill up the surrounding space. I noticed a few auras that were filled in alternately (like crescent moon) to create a stacked effect. I like that there are lots of subtle differences in the way the spirals are drawn.
The original fabric.

DeleteThat's an awesome Pinterest board Zasa! Thanks for sharing!
DeleteI have that same fabric and felt that tangly attraction to it. I love how you really looked at it and pulled out the elements that make it so fun. Your delightful discovery and creation reminds me to slow down and appreciate the inspiration all around me.
ReplyDeletethank you, Janet!
DeleteThis pattern is almost exactly like "Dansk" by Margaret Bremner. She closes the little tear drop shape at the center of each little tangle bit. Otherwise they are just the same as far as I can tell. Check it out. I also have one called "Sand Swirl" that is just about the same as well. And of course our old favorite called "Verve" leans pretty much that way too. With so many hundreds of tangles out there now...we are bound to start inventing slight variations on ones that are already there. But I love Eureka and will keep a copy with the above as a very nice variation! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Ginny, I'm very familiar with all three of those patterns and love them. I know this looks like a couple of others, but I think it's still unique enough in the way it's drawn to be counted as a separate pattern. :o)
DeleteI think it will be fun to keep all 4 of these patterns right together.
DeleteOrganizing patterns is always a crazy deal, isn't it? Generally, I just keep them by alphabetical order. But Margaret and I sometimes talk about organizing by "genre". That is by "organic" or by "borders" or by "circles". Another way might be by those like these 4 that have "general similarities". I have a bunch that have "heart shapes" in them, for instance. I would like to have us blog about organization again sometime. Eureka will be kept with Dansk, Sand Swirl and Verve for now. Sometimes I make a note next to a pattern and say "see also" and list a page #.
this is really cool, sandy, i'm going to have to give it a try. and believe it or not - i have that very same fabric - it's already sewn up into a quilt for my daughter-in-law :)
ReplyDeleteI love this! I just found your blog through Pinterest and will be using this to create more dimension to my journals!!
ReplyDeleteThis is stunning!
ReplyDeleteAs a beginner I would really appreciate at step-out for this tangle, please, Sandy.
